our first thanksgiving living here in portland.

it's amazing to be living here and sharing it with all my children together and yet, i'm feeling somewhere between...

somewhere between by theaterclouds

this contentment and the discontent of missing my extended family and friends back east.

so many small things remind me

of traditions and memories of holidays past

so today when i sit down to dinner and raise my glass in toast

it will be a toast to all of you my dear family and friends, near and far ...

i am truly thankful for all of the love, traditions and memories we've shared.

deck the halls, yes it's that time again

there are so many different interior decorating styles that lend themselves to different holiday looks, it's fun to sometimes shake up your nest a bit.

i thought i'd start with a few ideas for a holiday at home mid century style.

this cutie just needs a few white branches and a few blue flower sprigs tucked in it's tail for a different holiday color look

saturdays' portland style, it was a very good day.

the portland saturday market, on the waterfront downtown, hard to believe but it's the first time i've been. music, vendors, food. it's a celebration of the artist community and weekends.
i will be back

a stop at Hoo Doo Antiques, closed when i found it last march, i've been waiting to go to since then.

it was so worth the wait. there are now some awesome finds waiting in my studio for listing.

today is almost over, but i didn't want to miss a day writing to you

a no school day, it went something like this ::

photo shoot, play, work on listings, play soccer, a failed dinner recipe (yes, it ended in the trash), play.

all in all not a bad day, just a nondescript type of day with nothing much to share.

i did find this photo i wanted to share with you, taken a few years ago when i was on vacation here,

this was definitely not nondescript. it was truly beautiful.

you've been asking to see more of my new surroundings ::

Laurelhurst Park :: 27 acres of natural beauty inside the city, with winding roads, pond, and play areas, just about 1 mile from our house.

i took a walk just before sunset yesterday. the park is a riot of color (the leaves change a bit later & stay awhile longer than back east)

the park has a totally different feel this time of year, gone are the concerts and activities, left is an urban oasis

dusk settled to quickly :: the feeling of quiet beauty is one i would have liked to enjoy a bit longer

today i'm in studio doing a photo shoot. it's pretty ~~chilly~~ cold in here in the morning,

but i do so like to capture this morning light.

this photo is from the other day and still this basket tugs at me. i just love the sweet handmade repairs it must have truly been loved by someone.

and today i'm working with these cuties, hopefully i'll finish and get them in the shop tomorrow.

butternut squash risotto

hi there
weeknight dinners are still always such a puzzle for me. the day's always seem to fly by and suddenly it's dinner time.
but last night we gave dinner a little thought ahead of time and decided to try butternut squash risotto.

i'm so glad we did, it was warming and comforting on a cool night and so delicious.
we added a tossed salad and were good to go.

here's the recipe i played around with:

and a few notes from me:

don't be afraid to substitute ingredients. i didn't have mushrooms, so i topped it with caramelized onions. i also didn't have the shallots (didn't seem to harm the taste at all.) the butternut squash puree was an easy way to cook the squash and the touch of honey made it even more tasty. salt and pepper were the only spices i used or needed.

give it a try, it wasn't hard to do at all and i think you'll love it.

you felt a little strange to me, living in a new place,

luckily catching an amazing number of Geese, starting their migration

a taste of the wine at Mt Hood winery (what a spot to enjoy a glass)

apple picking mt hood river, they call it the "fruit loop tour"

finding new places to shop

the portland flea, a new venue :: more on this later

and of course halloween and oh, portland you did it so right.

neighborhoods filled with children and adults, streets and houses fully decorated

so bring on november portland ... i can't wait to see what you have in store.

the chicken and the estate sale

hi there
this is not the post i planned for you today but some times things just happen...

trying to be uber efficient, i spent an hour this morning prepping and cooking for dinner this evening. popped it in the oven and continued working while the smells of roast chicken and vegetables and a bit of smugness wafted through the house.

but when a phone call comes .. that says .. "I'm in the estate sale .. get here now!"
(the same sale we tried to get into yesterday 3 times.)

I did what I had to do >>
1. hurriedly dressed
2. turned off the oven & took the chicken out (unfortunately left it on the counter)
3. out the door

right, the poor chicken ended up in the trash .. but, .. the sale ..so worth it!

just a few peeks for you ...

i'm so smitten with this little chest.

today is wednesday. you know that's my regular antique bazaar day ... my woo hoo wednesday.

unfortunately, i had an appointment that lasted all morning....
i made it to the bazaar with only 15 minutes to spare.

so today, this little shopping spree was done in exactly ten minutes ... phew!

i know because one of the vendors had quite a laugh timing me ....

this week's shop update is a wee bit hard for me.

with my upcoming move across country, i'm trying to pare down as much as i can.
that means i have to let go of some of my personal items, ouch!

this week, it's from my beach collection.

this old piece of real blue coral (not living) is a large 12" and a beautiful display (pottery barn, eat your heart out :)

never did build the shed ..but i was ready with my window.

embracing the fog ...

good thing i like the fog, because this fog is just not letting up.

after five days...we might as well embrace it....

of course, the fog inspired me to find some beautiful rooms done in grey

Martha always has some wonderful rooms done in grey, this one is called putty

here a deep brown grey makes for a very restful space in the bedroom. i love how the little peek of aqua on the window trim adds a bit of interest.

and here, the white walls with a hint of grey undertone, the grey desk and accessories keeps the studio calm. it allows many items to be left out and yet the room does not feel cluttered.

this is a photo of the kitchen in my last home in brewster. i always loved the light grey walls and the driftwood trim, sorry both custom mixed colors (many times,) i couldn't redo them if i tried.

i fell in love with these illustrations the minute i saw them. the emotion they conveyed in a simple look perfectly matched my mood.

they are the creations of artist Ashley Goldberg. Ashley states "the characters I create, whether monsters or little girls, are simple, humorous, empathetic, and a little bit pathetic," and that, friends, sounds a lot like me some days.

i also found out Ashley lives in Portland Oregon... well, now, just maybe I'll get to meet her.

should i start to share my moving journal...i think the time has come

today has started out quite foggy here on Cape Cod.
i do love the fog, but it always puts me in a pensive mood

and while i'm starting to sort and clear out things from the house, i wonder what do i do with all the photos.

there's many that i know i will never part with. the photos of special moments so close to my heart, will always stay with me.

but people, i have so many...we're talking boxes, large moving boxes of photo's i've inherited from my parents, cousins, etc....

yes, i'm asking for help!!! what do you do with all the photos from the past? i'd love you to share some ideas here.

this is a photo of our living room taken before we bought our house.

one of the things i didn't like, was the wall of cabinets in the living room. i loved the idea of a bookcase wall but this one looked like a wall of kitchen cabinets.

we couldn't wait...so before we even moved in, we removed all of the top cabinet doors. it helped the look and it certainly held most of our books, favorite pieces and some of my finds before they made their way into the shop.

but it just never looked quite right to me. well, now that we're getting ready to sell our home and fixing all those little things you just live with...but are really, not completely done...
a project we did finish, was to add more shelves and moulding... and now, finally, the bookcase wall looks just right to me. sigh, why did i wait to finish this!

with my upcoming move i've made a few rules regarding shopping for solsticehome.

1. buy nothing large
2. buy nothing heavy
3. buy nothing breakable

and then this past saturday i attended the monthly flea in my town....

i broke them all....

large...this brass and enamel floor lamp with the fabulous turquoise color

heavy... shipping crate with soft worn wood and fabulous typography on top...

breakable... antique mirrors with the most wonderful glass...and yes, the large box behind them is filled with lab glass....

so, you see i really couldn't resist and they will all be in the shop soon, unless of course, i hear you want them first. send me a note if you see something you'd like.

Question for my seller friends...how do you control what you buy? Do you pass up fabulous finds or do you jump in and buy?

i'm a day late and it's hard to meet on a monday.
that's why i'm sitting at a kitchen counter and not a warm cozy room. but what a kitchen it is!!

while searching for replacement lights to update the house this week.
i found there's a whole new world of lighting coming to home design

the Felt Shade by Tom Dixon

A shade that employs a technique known as fabric-forming. Felt is created by heat pressing a double layer of material which is then sculpted into shape. The shade has a tactile grey exterior and white interior.

The Bye Bye Bulb by Daniel Michel, LED Pendant Light Fixture

A funky industrial design piece. The skeleton of a shade and an invisible bulb stealthy disguise a 10 watt LED bulb that is hidden in the socket for a traditional incandescent bulb.

The Modern Plywood Lighting Design by Faf-fin

this contemporary lighting system is made of 4mm plywood and comes as a flat pack. This modern lighting can be hung or it can be placed in the ground if you want to hold a garden party. It produces a soft light. I do like the look of these outside.

with the new light bulb regulations coming, i'm sure of two things

1. everyone will be buying up the old ones off the shelves by the armful &
2. we'll be seeing so many new types, shopping for a light bulb will not be a fast chore.

"Under federal law, incandescent bulbs are being phased out beginning next year when American manufacturers no longer will be allowed to make 100-watt bulbs. By Jan. 1, 2014, the only incandescents left on the market will be three-way bulbs, plant lights and appliance lamps"

out & about...a cape cod vacation

thinking about a summer vacation on cape cod?
how about a vacation in a lighthouse.

The Wings Neck Lighthouse is an incredibly unique and historic property
Wings Neck Light was built in 1849. For many years, Wings Neck was deemed one of the most important lighthouses on the Atlantic Coast because of the heavy shipping traveling the Cape Cod Canal.

Formerly a US Coast Guard Lighthouse. The light tower still stands attached by a breezeway to a three bedroom keepers home. Located at the tip of Wings Neck Point, in the town Pocasset on Cape Cod.

Situated literally inches from the water, the rocky slopes are beautiful and traditionally New England. The house was completely renovated in 2003 and is now available for weekly rental year round.

There are sleeping accommodations for eight. The house has three upstairs bedrooms, a full bath upstairs, a half-bath downstairs and an outdoor shower.

Receive flowers for Valentines Day? Lucky you!

here's a few tips to keep them fresh longer....

As soon as you receive a bouquet of flowers

Use a sharp garden shears, knife or scissors to cut about one inch off of each stem at a 45-degree angle. The key word is sharp, try not crush the stems.

Use lukewarm water for the vase.

Remove any leaves and foliage from the stems that will be below the water. Decomposing leaves can contaminate the water.

Adding a preservative to the water is one way to keep it bacteria-free, and to provide the cut flowers with enough nutrients to hold out a bit longer than they might otherwise.

A few DIY preservatives

Add a few tablespoons of sugar The sugar acts as the plant's food, long after the root supply has been cut off.

Add a bit of bleach to the water. about 1/4 tablespoon of bleach per quart of water is more than enough. If used in moderation, the bleach helps purify the water and kill bacteria.
or
Add an aspirin and a penny The aspirin lowers the water's pH level, warding off bacteria, and the penny serves as a fungicide.

Some gardening experts say you can pour a 12-ounce can of non-diet Sprite or 7-Up into a half gallon of water. The acid in the soft drink will slow bacteria growth and the sugar will feed the plant.

Change the water daily and ENJOY!

You should also keep your flowers away from the fruit bowl. You can’t see it, but that fruit gives off ethylene gas, which will make the flowers deteriorate more quickly.

Daffodils and tulips don’t always get along! two of my favorite flowers!! a little secret from gardening expert Mary Robson.. Daffodil sap is toxic to tulips.

i was not going to start thinking about the garden yet...

but today seems like a good day for spring thoughts...that groundhog didn't see his shadow..we're promised an early spring...

then in my inbox today, White Flower Farm started tempting me with their new plants catalog..

Delphinium grandiflorum Summer Nights; Loose spikes filled with indigo-blue flowers appear all summer on compact, well-branched plants only 12in tall and butterflies love them.

Epimedium Alabaster, a ground cover: Large, pure-white flowers trimmed with purple sepals stand above the foliage in spring, and the bright, grass-green leaves stay attractive till frost.

this week's place for sunday morning coffee is right here, in my sun room.

it's sunny, warm & cozy in here...it's about 5 degrees outside...let's stay in and enjoy this room while we can...

which brings me to a bit of news i have for you ... we are moving ...we are heading west...all the way west...
to Portland Oregon!

that would be ALL of us...two households, with 4 adults, 1 child, 1 dog.. and 2 shops, solsticehome and trampoline. we're joining our son and daughter who have lived in Portland for 3 yrs now. it's time to reunite this family.

i couldn't be more excited and yes, a little apprehensive about all the details. . i know it's not impossible and i'm ~~pretty sure~~ positive it will be very interesting ;)

i've decided to write a weekly journal of our unfolding adventure. i hope you'll follow along with me. i think i'll need some words of encouragement now and then.

running around today, which means this post is running late today.

i did manage to find a couple of fun things online for us to share

this one because, i'm really, really craving chocolate right about now and i think it's such a great idea!

hot chocolate on a stick, found on the lovely camille styles blog, go there and find out more about it.

this one..because it's just plain fun...even taking the laundry downstairs would be more fun..

and i think every home should have something unexpected.

the beauty of simplicity

last fall I had the chance to visit Plymouth Plantation, a bicultural interative museum, offering personal encounters with the Wampanoag People and the Colonial English community in the 1600s.

it was such an interesting visit and an eyeopener for me. as an antique lover and seller, i just wanted to gather up all the primitive items i saw.

the experience of actually seeing how the pilgrims lived that very sparse and fundamental life was enlightening

they lived with only the barest necessesites and a few cherished items.

but the thing that was most striking to me was the light surrounding it. i could not stop taking photos.

and then i realized, in this simplicity, is the ability to see the individual beauty of each small detail.

it's helping me try to clear away some of the clutter.

and instead, try to focus on the seeing the individual beauty of each of the things i cherish.

a shop update today.... and a little heads up.. this is what's coming to the shop this week...

a wonderful vintage patchwork quilt, fabulous colors and patterns.

and hopefully this large basket, it's perfect for storing blankets or laundry.

this large old glass bottle with metal trim, an industrial farmhouse vibe for forcing branches

the two small jars are awesome and you'll find this one and this one in the shop already.

antique tole painted tin pastry box, a bit rustic but oh, so sweet

this antique metal lunchbox with leather handle, was well used.

it will be listed as found with the very cool gray thermos.

i'm also working on a clearance sale...and i do mean clearance!! it will be posted here...before it's officially posted in the shop ;)
