out and about :: laurelhurst park

{life here day 8}

hi there
you've been asking to see more of my new surroundings ::
Laurelhurst Park :: 27 acres of natural beauty inside the city, with winding roads, pond,  and play areas, just about 1 mile from our house.

i took a walk just before sunset yesterday.  the park is a riot of color (the leaves change a bit later & stay awhile longer than back east)

the park has a totally different feel this time of year, gone are the concerts and activities, left is an urban oasis

dusk settled to quickly :: the feeling of quiet beauty is one i would have liked to enjoy a bit longer

for more info on Laurelhurst Park

today is beautiful here :: hoping it is there as well

a little of this..a little of that

hi there
sorry, i've been MFB (missing from blog) this past week.  i'll admit i've spent some fun time with my grandson (you know how much I enjoy my time with him) and i did manage to head to the beach a few times..a little too few.

mostly i've been getting together some new things for fall in the shop. here's a little peek of what will be showing up very soon.

and for back to school and work (yes, i know i hate the thought of it too) but i guess it's coming anyway so i'm gathering some cool vintage to help make the transition a little easier.

oh and a little project i'm working on...something i've wanted to do for awhile
is to create an occasional solsticehome original from found objects.

the first one is a fun combination of an antique washer and an industrial clamp light.
meet the "farmhouse industrial lamp"

i hope you like it.

i have been a busy girl, haven't i ;)

have a lovely friday everyone

introducing my new hometown

Sandwich Ma
I’ve just realized that I haven’t written one blog about my new hometown.
Which is quite unbelievable,
it took me 6 months to find a home in a town I was determined to live in!

Incorporated in 1639, Sandwich is the oldest town on Cape Cod and one of the oldest towns in the United States, settled by European immigrants nearly 150 years before the American Revolution.

So here is a short trip around Sandwich from the eyes of a newcomer.
summer concert on the pond

4th of july parade

the night concert & boat parade 4th of july

gristmill on hoxie pond(they still grind cornmeal)

hoxie pond (where a grandson can catch his 1st fish)

boardwalk beach(you can float or boat to the bay)
the colors of fall on the marsh

the boardwalk to cape cod bay

To be continued....

Thanks for visiting

Fall

The first day of fall.
It's not my favorite time of year. I'm more of a spring type. I get excited when I spot flowers peeking out of the ground, hear the birds chirping, see the days are getting longer and life seems to be waking up.
Yes, fall does have its merits. Apple picking, apple pie, pumpkin's, lovely walks on a quiet beach, sitting by a warm fire. It brings us back into our homes, to settle in and nest.
With a chill in the air, it is time to put away the summer weight blankets and take out the warm comfy ones.

My favorite ones are striped vintage wool blankets. Hudson Bay blankets, dating back to the early 1800's, are probably the best known. They have small vertical black stripes or tick lines at one edge indicating the size of the blanket. Others well known are Beacon and Pendleton. But don't pass up the many wonderful ones which were homespun in homes though out the country. Each one unique to the makers taste and colors available to them.
I have one posted on my etsy shop at http://solsticehome.etsy.com
The simplicity of these blankets blend perfectly with today's decorating trend of a more casual atmosphere. Even the ones with blemishes can be used. Try a pillow cover, cover a headboard, warm up a chair by reupholstering it.
Tip
Have a favorite ottoman that is a bit worn?...It's the perfect candidate for a blanket cover up.
For today.... have a wonderful first day of fall
